WOMEN EMPOWERMENT EVEREST EXPEDITION 2018

WOMEN EXPEDITION

Year 1953 was a great inspiration for every mankind, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa with a successful ascend of world’s highest point on earth Mt. Everest, entered the book of records. This allured thousands of people to dream about this glorious mountain. Hundreds made brave attempts; some lost their lives, whereas some made the historic triumph on the mountain. The book of records over almost six decades now has been decorated with various records from different climbers across the globe.

Since then many expeditions have been organized by different groups from all around the world with different objectives and slogans. Some has summited to fulfill their dreams, some has summited to spread the message for society where as some has summited to give the message on climate change and global warming and its effects on human beings and the whole earth as well as many expeditions has been made to clean the mountain itself.

junkoJunko Tabei (22nd September 1939 – 20th October 2016), a Japanese mountaineer was the first woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest. On 16 May 1975, Tabei reached the summit of Everest with her Sherpa guide and became the first women in the world to summit Everest. During her mountain career, she had also faced lots of challenges and problems one of which was she was frequently told that women should be raising children instead.

pasang lhamu

Similarly, Pasang Lhamu Sherpa (10th December 1961 – 22nd April, 1993), was the first Nepalese Woman to summit Mount Everest. On 22nd April 1993, after three unsuccessful attempts, she reached the summit of Mount Everest. But it wasn’t her complete day as while descending from the summit, the weather, as often happens in the mountain, suddenly turned bad causing her to lose herown life on the south summit. She was born into a mountaineering family and was involved in climbing from her teens. She had successfully climbed Mont Blanc, Cho Oyu, Mount Yalapic, Pisang Himal and other before attempting Mt. Everest.

Although its been a long time already since Pasang Lhamu Sherpa climbed Mt. Everest, very few Nepalese women has climbed Everest till now. The recorded number till date is approximately 25 women to summit Mt. Everest. This number shows that still Nepalese women are not coming out from their houses despite having all skills and capabilities. So, to end this culture, we are organising an Everest Expedition in 2018 to tell all the women of Nepal to break the bar of closed family life and come out to show their skills and capabilities and empower themselves.

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT EVEREST EXPEDITION 2018 is a very important expedition which will start on spring season of 2018. The main objective of this expedition is to spread the message of empowering women through mountaineering. So, the title of this expedition has been written as “WOMEN EMPOWERMENT EVEREST EXPEDITION 2018”, empowering women through mountaineering.

Vision and Mission Statement

This expedition or a project is being done with a very important and great vision which is very important for the society, especially for women. Since this expedition is being done to empower women, the main vision is to make women capable of doing everything and self dependent through mountaineering by 2030.

So, for this vision to be successful there has to be a strong mission statement which is why in 2018 the expedition to summit Everest has been organized to spread a very strong and important message of empowering women through mountaineering and tourism sector. The main specialty of this expedition is that all the members of this expedition will be female member either its team leader or guide or porter or its kitchen staff.

Objective

The main objective of this expedition is to empower women through mountaineering and tourism sector. Since, Nepal is a developing country and there are many remote areas where many women are relying on their families where they have to look after their family and home as a housewife. As well as there are many societies where women are prohibited to work away from home, some are socially excluded where as there are many women from marginalized communities and single mothers and widows. Similarly, there are many women who has returned from foreign migrant worker and has been struggling to do something in Nepal. So, this expedition has been organized with the objective of uplifting the life and living way of these women so that they will be recognized in the society.

One of the main problems in Nepal for women is women trafficking. Since, there are many remote areas and villages where there is no education and employment facilities, many traffickers target these places to traffic girls and women. Girls, women and their families also accept their offers unknown to what is going to happen since they are in need of money and ends up in a wrong place where they don’t have any freedom. Another problem for women in context to Nepal is male dominant society and culture where there is biasness in everything. Gender Equality is a globally run campaign where many countries, INGO’s and NGO’s including many other organizations are involved and have achieved certain success but still it’s not enough in a real world. So, this expedition will raise the voice of gender equality with a vision of 50-50 by 2030.

So, on a way to achieve this objective, the first step will be to summit Mt. Everest from where the members of this expedition will spread the message of women empowerment. After achieving this historic achievement, they will then campaign for women empowerment as well as they will be climbing guide, climbing leader, team leader for other expeditions where they can bring new female members for the expedition.

They will also lead the campaign called “Women’s Way” campaign which is initiated by Sherpa Shepherds, an expedition operator, from where they can raise their voices even more loudly about the women and empowering them.

Expected Outcomes

After completion of this project/expedition, there are certain expected outcomes in a short term and long term with quick positive effects by the message raised by the expedition. First of all, women will get the opportunity to work which will help to reduce unemployment rate in the society hence, increasing the employment rate. They also will get a chance to learn in a multi culture environment which will be very helpful to make them confident, self dependent and self reliant. They can also develop their personalities, skills and capabilities which will help them to create their names in a society. As the result, it will help to reduce women trafficking and will stop it in a long run.

On the other hand, it will share the message of women empowerment which will encourage women from different sectors and regions with the campaign called Women’s Way which also raises voice on gender equality and this expedition will help to get more voices and pressure on gender equality with an aim of 50-50 by 2030.

How We Do

Since every expedition needs certain funds and financial support to operate, for this expedition, we will need huge funds which we will be collecting from different national and international organizations, institutions, Nepal Government etc. as a donation as this is an expedition to spread message about women empowerment and a movement to empower them. Sherpa Shepherds, who is an organizer of this expedition, will also help certain financial and technical support for this team, more description of the company is in another section, About the Company”.

As the preparation and to know the capabilities of every members, this team has already summited “Ramdung Peak (5925m)” on 24th August, 2017 and will attempt to summit another higher peak as a final preparation before going for a Everest.
